Police in Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., will receive body cameras through a federal grant announced Monday.

The $352,500 grant, which requires a 50-50 local match, can be used to purchase equipment but requires “a strong implementation plan and a robust training policy before purchasing cameras,” according to the announcement from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Police in Wichita and Dodge City, Kan., also received grants.

“Body cameras are a big step forward in our efforts to protect officers and the public — and to build trust between police and the communities they protect,” Barry Grissom, the U.S. attorney for Kansas, said in a written release.

The grants are among more than $23.2 million awarded to 73 law enforcement agencies in 32 states announced Monday by U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch.
