KCK police apologize for officers posing with rifles in front of sign
The Kansas City, Kan., Police Department issued an apology Sunday after photographs showed two officers posing with rifles in front of a vandalized stop sign.
In the photographs, lettering had been added to a stop sign to read, “Cops STOP murder’n.” The two officers posed in front of the sign with patrol rifles.
The incident came to the attention of the department after a neighbor saw the officers and posted pictures of them on social media, according to Amber Hickerson, a spokeswoman for the department. Hickerson did not know exactly where the sign was located but said the vandalized lettering had since been cleaned off.
“The photos are disappointing and inappropriate,” the department said in a press release, adding that the incident is under investigation. The police officers were not identified, and no information was available on possible discipline.
The department said in the news release that it has spent considerable time building trust between officers and the community.
“We hope the actions of these two officers will be viewed as poor judgment and will not take away from the good work being done every day by members of the Kansas City, Kansas, police department,” the statement said.
