A federal judge on Friday fined a former Clay County sheriff’s deputy $2,000 and placed him on probation for one year for physically assaulting a jail inmate in 2008.
Eric M. Bottorff, 33, pleaded guilty last year in U.S. District Court in Kansas City to violating the man’s civil rights.
Bottorff, who was fired after the incident, also faced a state assault charge but was acquitted in Clay County. Federal prosecutors filed the civil rights charge after the acquittal.
The charge stemmed from a December 2008 incident at the Clay County Detention Center in which the 29-year-old inmate was doused with a chemical spray and punched numerous times.
