Murder charges filed in shooting at 49th and College
Prosecutors have charged a 20-year-old Kansas City man with murder in a Saturday night shooting near 49th Street and College Avenue.
Steven C. Winters, charged Sunday, had been apprehended about an hour after police found Maurice B. Brown, 48, dead and surrounded by 11 shell casings from a 9 mm weapon.
Winters faces charges of second degree murder and armed criminal action, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker’s office.
According to police, a woman stepped between Winters and her mother, whom he was threatening to kill after Brown had been slain.
“I ain’t leaving any witnesses,” Winters had said, the mother told police.
The daughter, who had been concerned about her infant at the house, drove Winters to another location. The infant had been carried from the house by a man when he heard gunshots.
Police located Winters at another residence, where he surrendered. A search found a 9 mm handgun, police said, which witnesses at the second residence said Winters had with him when he arrived.
