Johnson County woman charged with animal cruelty

A Johnson County woman was jailed Wednesday on allegations of mistreating numerous animals on her rural property.

According to court records, Julie Renee Bernet is charged in Johnson County District Court with nine counts of cruelty to animals. A judge set her bond at $25,000.

Bernet, 46, was arrested on the charges Wednesday and is scheduled to make her first court appearance Thursday afternoon.

The allegations involve dogs that were allegedly found mistreated late last year in the 21300 block of Nall Avenue in southern Johnson County. The charges allege that the animals were denied food, water and shelter.

Each charge is a misdemeanor that carries a maximum sentence of up to one year in jail.
