Man kills Kansas woman, injures officers by setting them ablaze, police say

A Kansas woman was killed and three police officers were injured after a man set them on fire early Saturday, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The suspect, who had not been named or charged at the time of the release, allegedly entered a Baxter Springs woman’s home in the southeast corner of Kansas and assaulted her.

Police responded to a report of a disturbance at 65-year-old Sharon Horn’s home at about 1:30 a.m.

The suspect allegedly set fire to the woman and two Baxter Springs Police Department officers upon their arrival at the scene. The Joplin Globe reports the man doused them in gasoline.

Horn died at about 7 a.m. at a Springfield, Mo., hospital.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the incident, reported that a third officer arrived on scene and also suffered injuries. The suspect was injured as well.

Two officers have been treated and released from a hospital, and the suspect and another officer remain hospitalized.

Police said the suspect knew Horn.
