18-year-old man shot, killed by police in Ottawa, Kan.

An 18-year-old Ottawa, Kan., man was shot and killed by police officers and sheriff's deputies at about 8 p.m. Saturday in a store parking lot, Ottawa police said.

Officers with the Ottawa Police Department were dispatched to a man reportedly armed with a gun in the Orscheln’s Farm and Home parking lot. Deputies with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the call.

Responding officers made contact with a man later identified as Joseph Jennings in the parking lot. During the encounter, Jennings was shot by officers, Ottawa police said.

Jennings was treated at the scene by emergency personnel from the Franklin County Ambulance Service for gunshot wounds and transported to an Ottawa hospital. He died of the injuries there.

The department requested assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, which is handling the investigation. The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave while the KBI conducts the investigation.
