KC police identify 25-year-old man found shot to death in Westport

A 25-year-old man found shot to death Saturday night near 41st and Mill streets in the Westport entertainment district was identified by police as Derrick Jones of Kansas City.

Officers responded to the area just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday on a report of shots fired behind a grocery store. An off-duty Kansas City police officer located the victim, who sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body. A witness told police that Jones and two other people were robbed and then carjacked.

Jones was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died. The vehicle stolen during the robbery was later found unoccupied at Valentine Road and Broadway.

On Monday, police said they have increased patrols in entertainment districts throughout Kansas City. There has been an uptick in reported violent incidents in the Westport area over the past few months.
