Man arrested after arson fire that destroyed Overland Park house

A 38-year-old man accused of battering an Overland Park woman last month is now in custody in connection with a Saturday morning arson fire that destroyed her home.

The man was released from jail two days before the intentionally set fire that destroyed the house in the 16500 block of Metcalf Avenue, according to Johnson County court records.

According to jail and court records, the man was charged with aggravated battery and criminal damage to property on Sept. 20.

He posted bond and was released from custody last Thursday.

The woman had also obtained a protection order against the man in which she alleged that he had tried to kill her by choking her.

The woman was not home when the fire was reported about 6 a.m. Saturday, according to fire department officials.

Fire crews from three departments fought the blaze, which destroyed the two-story house and also damaged an outbuilding.

The man was taken into custody a short time after the fire, and prosecutors filed a motion seeking to revoke his bond.

No charges have been filed in connection with the fire.
