Police are investigating a reported sexual assault at Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village.

The incident was reported last week, according to Chief John Douglass, executive director of emergency services for the Shawnee Mission School District.

The alleged victim is a freshman girl who reported that she was assaulted by a male student inside a boys restroom at the school, Douglass said.

After the girl contacted school officials, Prairie Village police were contacted and are now conducting an investigation.

The results of the police investigation will be forwarded to the Johnson County district attorney’s office to determine if criminal charges are warranted.

Douglass said district officials have also conducted an internal investigation to determine what disciplinary sanctions would be imposed.

He said he could not comment on what action may have been taken, but said school officials took the incident “extremely seriously.”
