Johnson County

Five in running for Kansas congressional seat

Five candidates — two Republicans and three Democrats — are running in the Aug. 2 primary for the 3rd District House congressional race in Kansas. The 3rd District includes mostly Johnson and Wyandotte counties. It includes Kansas City, Kan., Olathe, Overland Park and Lenexa.

Kevin Yoder

Age: 40

Home: Overland Park

Website: http://www.yoderforcongress.com/

Prior experience: Yoder is the incumbent in the Third District primary and was first elected in 2010

Key issues: In a statement, his campaign said: “Congressman Yoder’s priority in this campaign is to bring common sense Kansas values to Washington, DC. Remove government barriers so we can grow the economy, create jobs, and grow paychecks. Restore local control to our public schools so our children can have every opportunity that was afforded to our generation. Keep our community safe by protecting our borders and defending the homeland from our enemies.”

Greg Goode

Age: 56

Home: Louisburg, has lived in the district since 2007

Website: http://goodeforcongress.com/

Prior experience: No prior elected office

Occupation: Retired, U.S. Army

Key issues: Goode is anti-abortion and supports gun rights. He said his top priorities are stopping “insane” spending at the federal level, increasing national security and limiting the influence of career politicians. He said he would like to use a fence to secure borders, and without doing so, it is impossible to enforce immigration laws. He said he wants Congress to attempt to limit executive orders that allow for leniency on immigration laws. Goode also said he has refused to take any PAC money and is running a shoestring campaign.

Jay Sidie

Age: 59

Home: Mission Woods, has lived in the district since 1995

Website: http://www.jay4congress.com/

Prior experience: No prior elected office

Occupation: Financial counselor

Key issues: Sidie said the ties between Yoder and Republican Gov. Sam Brownback are hurting Kansans. He does not support the governor’s policies on public education funding and infrastructure funding and would like to increase funding to both areas. Sidie said he would not support legislation geared toward special interest groups and large banks. He also said he supports legislation that would prohibit someone on the no fly list from purchasing a weapon and said Yoder is “dangerously wrong” on this. While he feels those individuals should have the right to make their case to be removed from the list, a ban would help prevent more gun violence.

Reggie Marselus

Age: 62

Home: Lenexa, he has lived in the district since 1994

Website: http://www.reggieforcongress.com/

Prior experience: No prior political experience, but Marselus ran for this congressional seat in the last election. He did not win the Democratic primary.

Occupation: Retired in 2005. Previously worked as a journeyman electrician and as a union official for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union.

Key issues: Marselus said he has a traditional Democratic platform with a focus on preserving Social Security and other social programs. Marselus describes himself as a “Bernie-crat” — but now supports Hillary Clinton’s candidacy. He said he is also in favor of LGBT rights, gay marriage, women’s rights, worker’s’ rights and is pro-choice. “As a retired construction worker, I recognize what laboring people need,” he said.

Nathaniel McLaughlin

Age: 62

Home: Kansas City, Kan., has lived in the district since 1985

Website: http://www.nmclaughlinforcongress.com/

Prior experience: KCK housing authority for 6 years, appointed role; president of Kansas State NAACP, president of KCK NAACP. He has previously run for office.

Occupation: Regional manager at Sodexo, a food services company.

Key issues: McLaughlin supports a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants in the country and does not support the calls for mass deportation. However, he said, he supports national defense and national security measures that would prevent another influx of undocumented immigration. He also would fix the federal budget by creating a relationship with the executive branch, looking at every single line item and having all government agencies justify their spending. He said he believes in the Second Amendment but that several legal cases have challenged the idea that it is an unlimited right, and he supports a ban on assault rifles. “I firmly plan to establish a rapport with colleagues across the aisle, without violating my principles,” he said.
