Katie Horner shifts from TV weather to plumbing
Former TV meteorologist Katie Horner is in the plumbing business.
She and her fiance, Shawn Sapp, are running Katie’s ASAP Plumbing, currently based in Raymore with service covering most of the Kansas City area starting in August.
Horner was a fixture at KCTV-5 in Kansas City for 17 years. She joined the station in 1994 and became chief meteorologist, replacing Gary Amble, in 1998.
She left KCTV in 2011 and worked in real estate. Then she began doing weather at a St. Louis station in January 2013. But she recently quit her gig at KMOV, Channel 4, to return to her home and three young daughters here.
Horner and Sapp decided in January to run the business together, she said.
“Shawn proposed marriage and a business partnership at the same time,” she said Wednesday, adding that her daughters were excited to help answer the phone for the company.
“We have each spent our lives caring for and helping people through times in their lives when they need a calm, dependable, trustworthy person to guide them through a ‘storm,’” they say on the company’s website. Sapp says his family has been in plumbing, construction and contracting for 50 years.
Horner said that people caught in this kind of a storm need to see a face they can trust.
“My reputation is on the line.”
