Kansas City Zoo acquires two Sumatran tigers

The Kansas City Zoo has acquired two Sumatran tigers to replace two that were sent to other zoos for breeding.

The zoo’s previous tigers were sent to the Dallas Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Sumatran tigers are critically endangered and the movement of captive animals among zoos is dictated by a species survival plan that aims to maximize genetic diversity.

Sumatrans are the smallest tiger species, but they can still weigh 300 pounds.
