Kearney police officers rescue baby fox from storm drain

Two Kearney police officers rescued a baby fox from a storm drain Wednesday night.

The officers had responded to a call from a resident who heard crying noises coming from a storm drain. After some investigating, they spotted the baby fox — also known as a cub, pup or kit — cowering inside.

One officer, Sgt. Joe Kantola, entered the storm drain, but the fox retreated farther into the system, according to a police department account of the incident posted to Facebook.

The other officer, J.D. Garton, entered the drain system from another side to keep the fox from going farther.

After crawling through 150 feet of storm drains, the officers caught the fox and took it to a veterinarian, where it will receive care and be released later, police said.
