Lee’s Summit police officer fatally shoots knife-wielding man

A Lee’s Summit police officer fatally shot a man Sunday while responding to a domestic disturbance, according to authorities.

The shooting occurred at a home in the 200 block of Northwest Hickory Street, where officers were called about 12:40 p.m. A person at the home had called 911 and said someone was assaulting other people at the residence.

The first officer who arrived was confronted by a man who charged at the officer with a “large knife in his hand,” according to police.

The officer fired, striking the man in the chest. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The man’s name was not released on Sunday. Police described him as in his 30s.

The officer has been on the force for 24 years and was placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, which is routine after such incidents.
