Memorial to Hyatt hotel skywalks disaster to be unveiled Nov. 12
The Skywalk Memorial Foundation next month will unveil a statue and park dedicated to the 1981 Hyatt hotel disaster.
The public event will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 12 at a site within Hospital Hill Park at 22nd Street and Gillham Road. It will include a tribute to the first responders as well as a reading of names of the 114 people killed when the skywalks fell during a dance in the lobby of the former Hyatt Regency Hotel.
The non-profit foundation has spent several years raising money for the $550,000 memorial and an endowment. A sculpture was designed by Kansas City artist Rita Blitt.
