One man died and a firefighter was injured in a fire Monday morning in Grandview.

Firefighters responded at 9:56 a.m. to the fire in a two-story building at 822 Main St. They rescued three people and found one person dead, said Grandview Fire Chief Ron Graham.

A business occupied the building’s first floor. The second floor contained seven apartments, six of which were occupied.

The building’s ceiling collapsed, trapping a Grandview fire captain, Graham said.

“We had to pull our ladder truck up to a window where one of our firefighters grabbed him, pulled him out through a window and onto the ladder,” Graham said. The firefighter suffered second-degree burns and was taken to a hospital.

The building had working smoke detectors, Graham said.

Firefighters from the Kansas City and Belton fire departments assisted the Grandview firefighters.

The cause of the fire had not been determined, Graham said. By late Monday, Grandview fire investigators were working with Grandview police as well as personnel from the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, looking for clues.

“We are all sifting through the debris very slowly, just to make sure we don’t miss anything,” Graham said.

The identity of the man killed had not been released, Graham added.
