The name of the Independence Events Center apparently will change, according to an announcement made Friday.

A news conference has been scheduled for next Wednesday by the city of Independence as well as Spectra by Comcast Spectacor, an entertainment company.

Frank White, former Kansas City Royals second baseman and a member of the Jackson County Legislature, will serve as ceremony host. Also scheduled to attend are Eileen Weir, Independence mayor, and Lamar Hunt Jr., president and owner of the Missouri Mavericks hockey team.

The events center, located just southeast of the intersection of Interstate 70 and Missouri 291 at 19100 E. Valley View Parkway, opened in November 2009.

It has been the home of the Mavericks and also has served as a community center, hosting events such as high school graduation ceremonies.
