A 25-year-old man has been charged with murdering a woman whose body was found Feb. 1 inside a motel room in the 3200 block of Broadway.

Paul W. Simmons faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of 49-year-old Brenda E. Anderson, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Sunday in a press release.

Her body was found by motel employees about 10 a.m. after guests reported hearing a woman's screams.

Police said at the time that Anderson checked in under her own name and that they believed Anderson knew her killer. They said she had been at the motel with someone for some time before she was killed.

Police found a business card in the trash can of the room with Simmons' name handwritten on the back. In addition, surveillance video at the motel showed Simmons checking in with Anderson and going in and out of their room.

Simmon’s fingerprints were matched to those found in the room, police said, and his Facebook page shows Simmons wearing a hat identical to one he was wearing in the surveillance video.

Prosecutors have requested a $250,000 bond in the case.
