People on social media were calling him a hero – the unidentified bearded dude carrying a South Carolina flag mowing the lawn of the Lincoln Memorial Wednesday morning. But park officials told him to move on, and he did.
Twitter user Brandon Morse posted a photo of the mowing man, tweeting: “A guy has taken it upon himself to mow the lawn at the Lincoln Memorial. God bless that man.”
The image swept social media quickly, where people posted comments like this: “I love this! Somebody find out his name! The web is abuzz with this guy but I haven’t learned who he is yet. But I want my daughter to take note: this is what a real man is like.”
But the Weekly Standard reports that Park Police were alerted to the guy, who had a lawn mower and a dolly full of tools with him. Three cruisers “with multiple officers” reportedly showed up, according to the mag.
The mag “watched the officers observing the mystery mower from a distance, as he appeared to be packing it up for the day, carefully placing his blue South Carolina flag in a tube attached to his tool-toting dolly.”
A Park Police spokesman told the Weekly Standard that Random Dude was not arrested. “He was asked to leave, and he complied," the spokesman said.
Come on, now. Why didn’t they just let him finish the job?
UPDATE: The CBS
affiliate in Washington reports that the random mowing guy is Chris Cox, who is on a one-man mission to clean up the National Mall while Park Service employees are furloughed during the government shutdown.
Cox, who lives in South Carolina, told the news station that he wasn’t doing it for any political reasons, but just wanted the place to look nice when veterans attend the Million Vet March in D.C. this weekend.
"These are our memorials. Do they think that we’re just going to let them go to hell? No," he told All-News 99.1 reporter John Domen.
"If they shut down our memorials, we’re still going to take the trash out, we’re going to clean the windows, we’re going to cut the grass, we’re going to pull the weeds, we’re going to do the tree work."
