Driver dies after fleeing police and crashing into parked cars

A suspected impaired driver died Thursday night after he fled from police and crashed into parked cars near 25th Street and Chestnut Avenue, Kansas City police said Friday.

An officer spotted Jorge A. Davis, 23, of Kansas City, Kan., going the wrong way on a one-way street at 12th Street and Woodland Avenue about 1:30 a.m.

Davis drove about three blocks the wrong way before the officer pulled him over. When the officer walked up to the Ford Mustang, he noticed that Davis appeared impaired. Davis stomped the accelerator and took off.

The officer pursued, believing the driver posed a danger to the public, said police Sgt. Bill Mahoney.

The officer couldn’t catch the speeding Mustang and was several blocks behind when Davis lost control and hit the parked cars in the 2400 block of Chestnut. The collision tore off the Mustang’s front and rear wheels, but it skidded 00 feet and hit two other parked vehicles on the other side of the street, Mahoney said.

Firefighters had to cut open the vehicle to free Davis, who was alone in the car. He later died at a hospital.
