A Lafayette County, Mo., woman fatally shot her father in the back and then lost her nerve and could not kill herself, according to court documents released Thursday.
Colby Sue Weathers, 38, is charged with first-degree murder in the death Wednesday of Tex C. Delana, 60, in the house where they lived in the 700 block of Missouri 131 in Wellington.
According to court documents, Weathers bought a .45-caliber firearm and a box of ammunition Wednesday morning at a pawnshop in Odessa. She returned home and approached her father, who was sitting at a computer in the dining room. She fired once through the back of his chair. Delana attempted to get away but collapsed at the back door.
Authorities said Weathers then called police and said she couldn’t shoot herself.
“I was going to after I did it,” she told the dispatcher, according to the charging document. “I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I know I need to go to jail, but I am trying to kill myself first.”
Delana was pronounced dead at the scene.
Weathers’ bond was set at $750,000.
