Water main break affects downtown KC

A large water main burst Thursday morning in downtown Kansas City, sending water gushing into the air and disrupting service to residential and business customers.

The Water Services Department said a 10-inch main broke about 9:30 a.m. on 10th Street between Walnut and Main streets.

Water service was disrupted for customers on 10th Street from Grand to Central, on Main Street from 9th to 12th streets, and on Walnut from 9th to 10th streets.

By early afternoon, water was restored to properties west of Main but remained out east of Main. The department hoped to have the water back on to all properties by 6 a.m. today.

The street where the break occurred will remain closed because it buckled from the force of the water.

The pipe that broke was stamped with the year 1896.
