A Raytown man recently diagnosed with cancer got a unexpected lift recently when he bought a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket worth $1 million.

Ronald Taylor planned to take the lump sum payment of $700,000 before taxes, according to a news release from the Missouri Lottery.

He stopped to buy a loaf of bread and also decided to purchase a $5 ticket at Price Chopper, 300 S.W. Blue Parkway in Lee’s Summit.

“I won $5, so I bought another $5 ticket and it was a $10 winner,” he told lottery officials. “So I thought, ‘I’ll just buy a $10 ticket then.’ That’s when I hit it.”

He said he would use some of the money to help his daughter and grandchildren.
