Body found near burning SUV on southbound U.S. 69 in Lenexa


A burned vehicle was loaded on a truck Wednesday morning on the ramp off of southbound Interstate 35 to U.S. 69. Police were on the scene to investigate after body was found at the scene. The early morning incident backed up traffic along I-35 for hours.

Police are investigating the death of a person found early Wednesday near a burning sport utility vehicle on a Johnson County highway.

Firefighters found the body after responding to a vehicle fire about 4:15 a.m. on the U.S. 69 overpass over Interstate 35 in Lenexa. Police said the deceased person was connected to the vehicle.

The fire forced the closure of southbound U.S. 69 just after it splits from Interstate 35 in Lenexa. All lanes were reopened before 10 a.m.

Detectives were attempting to identify the dead person and notify relatives.
