An elderly couple was injured following a house fire early Monday in south Kansas City, officials said.

Neighbors called firefighters around 3:20 a.m. and said they heard alarms and saw smoke and fire coming from the roof of a house in the 9500 block of Belleview Avenue, said Jason Spreitzer, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.

When crews arrived, they helped the two residents, an elderly couple, get to the hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.

Several pets inside the home had died, Spreitzer said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
