Update: Merriam police said on Twitter that Johnson Drive was open for traffic again after a car fire temporarily closed it for about an hour Tuesday morning.

A car caught fire during the morning rush hour and forced police to close Johnson Drive under Interstate 35 in Merriam for about an hour, police said Tuesday on Twitter.

Flames could be seen coming from the vehicle in a photo that Merriam police posted from the incident. Firefighters can be seen battling the fire in the photo.

“Please avoid the area as all lanes of Johnson Drive are closed under I-35,” Merriam police said.

The fire also forced the exit from southbound I-35 to Johnson Drive to close, according to KC Scout. The incident began shortly before 8 a.m.

Johnson Drive reopened around 9 a.m. and was ready for traffic, Merriam police said on Twitter.
