Ottawa police investigating possible drowning of 10-year-old boy

Ottawa police are investigating the possible drowning of a 10-year-old boy Saturday at GreatLife Golf & Fitness, 1001 E. Logan St.

At 9:27 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a call about a missing boy at the golf course. They found the boy, identified as Devon Lee Rice of Ottawa, submerged in about five feet of water in a swimming pool. Emergency responders administered CPR and took Rice to Ransom Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:25 p.m.

According to a statement, witnesses said Rice arrived at the golf course with a family member, and went swimming with other children without the family member present. After he was reported missing, witnesses said he was last seen walking away from the golf course, so initial search efforts focused on that area. Investigators plan to conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to call Detective Steve Burkhart at 785-242-2561 ex. 430.
