Two men injured, one critically, in Overland Park duplex fire, officials say

A man suffered critical burns Friday when paint fumes ignited and sparked a flash fire inside an Overland Park duplex.

A second man suffered less serious burns in the incident just before 1 p.m. in the 8400 block of Kessler Street.

Overland Park Fire Department officials said investigators believe the men were using a paint sprayer in the basement when the fumes were ignited by an open flame in the furnace.

Fire officials said one of the men lives in the duplex unit. A woman and two children who live in the adjoining unit were not home at the time.

The men were being treated for their injuries at the University of Kansas Hospital’s burn.
