Year of the Dog celebrated at Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art’s Chinese New Year event

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art kicked off the Chinese New Year Sunday by celebrating the Year of the Dog.

Chinese art and culture were on display, including a drum and lion dance, acrobats, a traditional dress show, other dance performances, a Tai Chi demonstration and Chinese tea tasting.

“We are just so grateful and humbled that so many people in the community added this to the calendar of their family traditions,” said Sara Schmiedeler, the educator for family programming and events with the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art.

Students from the Institute of Chinese Language and Culture and the Chinese School of Greater Kansas City taught people how to say “Happy New Year” in Chinese.

Welcoming remarks were made with Nelson-Atkins director Julián Zugazagoitia, Mayor Sly James and Liu Jun, Deputy Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Chicago.
