Kansas City police release name of 2-year-old who reportedly shot himself to death

Police have identified the 2-year-old who reportedly shot himself early Sunday inside an apartment in south Kansas City as Jedon Edmond Jr.

Officers were summoned to the residence in the 9600 block of Lydia Avenue on a reported shooting around 1:15 a.m.

Jedon was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The boy’s father was at home at the time of the shooting and called police.

No other details were released, and police continued their investigation on Wednesday. The child’s age was originally reported as 5, but he was 2 years old, police said.

The shooting was at least the third unintentional shooting by a child in the Kansas City area this year and at least the 11th since 2013.

Police said free gun locks are available at each of the city’s six patrol divisions.
