Independence Center is evacuated because of smoke from a nearby fire

Customers and employees were evacuated Saturday evening from Independence Center after smoke from a small outdoor fire entered the mall, Independence police said.

The fire was reported to police about 7:40 p.m. The smoke apparently came from burning leaves outside the building, police said. One firefighter suffered minor injuries.
