Kansas City Fed event on April 2 kicks off Money Smart Month activities

A free event next Saturday sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City kicks off a month-long community focus on financial education.

The Kansas City Fed’s annual Money Smart Day will run from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the downtown Kansas City Public Library, 14 W. 10th St. The program will feature more than a dozen consumer finance sessions on topics such as credit reports, understanding mortgages, budgeting, starting a small business and building savings.

A session about avoiding financial pitfalls will be offered in English and Spanish. In addition, people can access a free copy of their credit report and discuss it on the spot with a credit counselor.

The focus of the event is to make sure “everyone has access to the resources and support they need to make sound financial decisions,” said Jeremy Hegle, a Kansas City Fed community affairs adviser who is coordinating Saturday’s program. Free parking is available.

As part of April’s Money Smart Month, organizers have launched a new website packed with financial information and educational tools. A team of volunteers from the Kansas City Fed, Central Bank of Kansas City, CHES Inc., Sturges Word Communications, Commerce Bank and the Alliance for Economic Inclusion began designing the website last June.

The website, at www.moneysmartkc.org, includes a full list of communitywide financial education activities scheduled for April.

Dozens of Kansas City area nonprofit organizations and financial institutions will be participating in financial education activities next month.
