Legacy Development plans to break ground this morning on its latest project, an $80 million redevelopment of the Northland’s Liberty Commons.

Liberty Commons, on the southeast corner of Interstate 35 and Missouri 152 in Liberty, is scheduled to reopen in fall 2016 as a 335,000-square-foot shopping center with locally owned and national restaurants, national retailers and a hotel.

Legacy Development founder Dan Lowe has long been active in Northland development, starting with BarryWoods Crossing in 1997, when his company was known as RED Development.

In a statement, Joanna Shawver, senior vice president of leasing for Legacy, said the company had, “tremendous response to the project from national brands looking to come north of the river.”

Shawver said the new center will complement existing retail in the area and many of the tenants are new to the Northland.

Academy Sports + Outdoors, a sports, outdoor and lifestyle retailer, will be an anchor tenant at 62,917 square feet. Products include hunting, fishing and camping equipment, sports and leisure products, footwear and apparel. It also has locations in Belton, Olathe and Overland Park.

Spin Neapolitan Pizza, a locally owned specialty pizza chain which also sells salads, sandwiches, gelato, craft beers and more, will open its second Northland location. Spin also is opening a restaurant in The Village at Burlington Creek, at Interstate 29 and 64th Street, later this year.

Other new Liberty Common tenants will be:

▪ Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse, a national chain selling shoes and accessories for women, men and children.

▪ Residence Inn Marriott

▪ Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage, a chain selling natural and organic foods, beverages, vitamins and supplements.

▪ McAlister’s Deli, a fast casual chain known for its sandwiches, stuffed baked potatoes and sweet tea.

▪ Louie’s Wine Dive, which has locations in Waldo, Iowa and Nebraska, as well as one opening soon in Overland Park.

▪ Aveda Lifestyle Salon, which carries the full line of Aveda products.

▪ Maurices, a women’s clothing store chain.

▪ Kirkland’s, a home decor and gift store chain.

▪ Five Below, a publicly held chain of discount stores selling products for $5 or less and geared to teens.

▪ Gordmans, a discount department store chain.

▪ Ulta Beauty, a beauty superstore chain.
