Restaurant family expands with K-macho’s in Olathe

The Romero family has expanded their Olathe offerings.

Their K-macho’s Mexican Restaurant Cantina recently opened at 1229 Santa Fe St., Olathe, next to their Bonito Michoacan Meat Market, Produce Bakery.

They’ve completely remodeled the former pool hall, separating it into sections — front entrance, main dining room, back bar area and private dining room. A large iron chandelier holds center court, while mid-century styled murals line the dining room walls. Kitschy ceramic pieces are found here and there, including monkeys clutching crushed beer cans. Brightly colored, hand-painted bar backs feature such scenes as men snoozing under their sombreros, tequila bottles in hand.

Menu items include pan-seared tilapia with light lemon wine sauce served on white rice and topped with mushrooms, shrimp, tomato and onion, and grilled shrimp topped with chipotle sauce.

Tortillas are made fresh in the bar area in the evenings.

Another Pie Five Pizza

Pie Five Pizza Co. plans to open its second area restaurant, this one in Oak Park Commons, 12154 W. 95th St., Lenexa. A mid-November opening is planned.

The Pie Five name comes from the 5 minutes it should take from order to pickup. The first Pie Five opened in Fort Worth in 2011, combining handmade pizzas with fresh ingredients and the latest high-speed baking techniques — the pizza takes only 2 1/2 minutes to bake and the restaurants say it should only take five minutes from the time they place their order to when they pick it up, thus the “five” in the Pie Five name. In 2102, Pie Five was named a hot concept of the year by Nation's Restaurant News.

The area franchisee also opened a location at 13366 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, in August.

New bundt cake shop

An area franchisee for Nothing Bundt Cakes plans to open a shop Friday at 13420 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.

The national chain sells a variety of bundt cake flavors, including red velvet, white chocolate raspberry, cinnamon swirl, and pecan praline, in a variety of sizes. The cakes come in a variety of sizes including the bite-size bundtini, the single serving size bundtlet, an 8-inch cake serving about eight people, a 10-inch cake serving about 18, and tiered cakes serving about 26 people.

The cakes also can be decorated with ribbons, birthday hats and flowers. Nothing Bundt Cake designs for special occasions such as birthdays, Mother’s Day, “thinking of you” and “thank you” gifts.

Quick bite

Academy Sports + Outdoors, a sports, outdoor and lifesyle retailer, plans to open Friday at 14405 W. 135th St. in Olathe. It also has a store in Overland Park.
