First area Academy Sports + Outdoors set to open Aug. 16

The metro’s first Academy Sports + Outdoors, a sports, outdoor and lifestyle retailer, plans a soft opening at 8 a.m. on Aug. 16.

The 73,000-square-foot store is at 9781 Quivira Road, Overland Park, just south of Oak Park Mall. A grand opening is planned for Aug. 23 to Aug. 25. An Olathe store, at 135th and Blackbob Road, is scheduled to open in October.

Academy Sport’s departments include footwear, outdoor living, camping, team sports, golf, archery, apparel, firearms, fitness, boating, and sunglasses and watches.

Items include athletic shoes, Crocs, and hiking boots; fire pits, grills, smokers and accessories like cast iron skillets and barbecue spices; Spider-Man and Hello Kitty backpacks; patio furniture and pop-up canopies; and sporting equipment including nearly an aisle of soccer balls.

The store also offers a variety of price options, including baseball gloves from $9.99 to $229.99.
