The Fresh Market will be the first tenant to open in the long-awaited Prairiefire development in Overland Park.

The Fresh Market, a specialty grocery retailer, plans an 8 a.m. opening on Sept. 4 for its first store in the metro. The 24,300-square-foot store, at 6261 W. 135th St., will have 30 different breads baked fresh daily and 14 different pies, a full-service meat counter with freshly ground beef, a wide selection of ready-to-serve entrees, fresh shipments of seafood several times a week, more than 200 domestic and imported cheeses, and more than 400 different items in the produce department, including a large organic selection.

The company said it tries to create an atmosphere reminiscent of European markets — the scent of fresh brewed coffee and freshly baked breads, along with the sound of classical music. The antique decor features soft lighting.

The Fresh Market, Greensboro, N.C., was founded in 1982 and currently has 138 stores in 26 states.
