Childhood friends Trey Sabates and Michael Pahura anticipated an east Brookside revitalization. So in 2009, they purchased a retail building with parking lot at 600 E. 63rd St.
“Brookside has always been a good area and this is on the outskirts of it. It was a gamble I guess,” Sabates said.
When their liquor store tenant moved out in mid-2012, they took over, remodeling the building and opening Brookside Wine & Spirits in the spot later that year.

Now they will expand the building and put in a separate entrance for Brookside Pizza & Taproom. They plan a late spring 2017 opening for the operation, which will have quick-serve pizza, along with wine and 20 to 30 craft beers with a focus on local breweries. It also will have a patio and offer full-service in the evenings.
“We were waiting for the neighborhood to come back around” Sabates said. “Now there are shops, townhomes, soon 20 to 30 offices between Oak and Holmes. The new influx of people need someplace to gather and eat and have a drink.”
