KCTV-5 meteorologist Tom Wachs is leaving Kansas City for a station in his hometown of Milwaukee.
Wachs, 33, will join WITI, Fox 6, as weekend evening meteorologist. He’ll get to work with a weathercaster he grew up watching, Fox 6 chief meteorologist Vince Condella. Wachs characterized the move as “a dream come true for me.”
His last day on the air at KCTV will be May 25.
Channel 5 news director Larry Perret said the station wanted to keep Wachs, “but the allure of the hometown opportunity was unique.”
Perret said he’s already recruiting candidates to replace Wachs. Since the recent addition of Lisa Teachman to the station’s morning show, KCTV has five full-time meteorologists.
Wachs joined KCTV in June 2008 after TV gigs in Johnson City, Tenn., and North Platte, Neb.
As a high school kid, he was a “weather watcher” for a Milwaukee TV station — he attached a thermometer and a rain gauge to his family’s mailbox — and eventually worked as an intern at three of the four network affiliates there. He also interned at the Weather Channel in Atlanta.
He spent his first two years of college at the University of Oklahoma in Norman and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
Nickname in high school and college: “Doppler,” which was also on his car license plate.
