Bitter cold with wind chills near zero jolts KC commuters, but a warmup is on the way
Kansas City woke up to bitter cold temperatures Tuesday, a day after 1 to 3 inches of snow fell in the metro area.
Temperatures at Kansas City International Airport fell to the low teens by 7 a.m. The wind, however, made it feel much colder. The wind chill temperature was 2 degrees.
While several crashes were reported Tuesday morning, road conditions were far better than Monday, when between 1 to 3 inches of snow turned roads icy and deadly.
The snow was only the third time in Kansas City’s 131 year history of weather data that there has been three measurable snow events by Nov. 12. The other two years were in 1898 and 1992, according to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill.
Highs Tuesday are expected to climb to the low 30s Tuesday in the Kansas City area. The forecast high is colder than the normal low temperature of 35 degrees for this time of year, according to the Weather Service.
Temperatures are expected to gradually warm the rest of the week, reaching the mid 50s by Friday. Despite the warming trend, temperatures will remain below normal for this time of year. Typically, highs are in the mid 50s, with lows in the mid 30s.
Another plunge of cold air is expected this weekend. There’s a chance of light snow Saturday night and Sunday morning.
