On-and-off rain showers threaten to make Sunday KC’s wettest day of the year

Several rounds of storms are threatening to make Sunday the wettest day of the year in Kansas City.

The storms are bringing scattered showers that produced heavy rainfall at times, according to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill.

As of 10 a.m., Kansas City had received 2.31 inches of rain Sunday, making it the second wettest day of the year. Only July 18, which had 3.29 inches of rain, was wetter, the Weather Service said in a post on Twitter.

Another band of heavier precipitation is expected to move over the Kansas City area Sunday afternoon, pushing Sunday closer to becoming the wettest day of the year.

Kansas City will likely see more rain as stormy weather is expected to continue through mid-week. Some of the storms could become severe, with the main threat being hail and strong winds. The tornado risk is low, according to the Weather Service.

Between 2 and 4 inches of rain could fall across the Kansas City area through Wednesday.

Because of the multiple rounds of rain, flash flooding and river flooding will be possible this week.

Northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri are more likely experience flooding, however localized flash flooding for areas east of Interstate 35 are also possible.
