United States Tennis Association Sweet 16 Championship concludes

The United States Tennis Association Sweet 16 Championship concluded Sunday at the Tennis Plaza Center. Three singles winners are from the Kansas City area.

Olivia Sneed was the lone Kansas City native to grab a singles championship on Sunday, beating Katie Fries 6-1, 6-2 in the Girls 18 division. In the 16-year old division, Dohee Lee topped Morgan Coppoc 6-3, 7-5.

Eighteen-year old Kenneth Boykin from Jenks, Okla., defeated David Hager 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 on the boys side, with Will Genesen defeating his doubles partner Alex Brown 6-4, 6-0 in the Boys 16 division.

The younger divisions, ages 12 and 14, wrapped up Friday.

Twelve-year old Alisa Prinyarux, of Overland Park, defeated Sarah Weber 6-2, 6-0. As for the boys, Justin Good defeated Jeremy Ouyang 6-1, 6-1.

Fourteen-year-old Taylor Leslie, of Stilwell, defeated Sofia Phillips 6-3, 6-1, and Pierce Rollins inched the win over Nathan Han 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.

The winning doubles partners feature many of the opponents featured in the various singles finals.

In Girls 18s, Sneed and Grace Schaffer, from Lenexa, defeated Elizabeth Barnickel and Fries 8-1. The Boys 18s featured Boykin and Alex Pozo defeating Alexander Kartsonis and Jack Santilli 8-2.

In Girls 16s, Victoria Flores and Margo Gerke, of Leawood, defeated Lee and Anna Riedmiller 8-6. Brown and Genesen defeated Brady Draheim and Fletcher Scott 8-4 on the boys side.

In Girls 14s, Anna Alons and Eren Sagun defeated Leslie and Phillips 8-3. Han and Mason Meier defeated Rhett Rollins and Pierce Rollins 8-4 for the boys.

In Girls 12s, Prinyarux and Callie Flanagan defeated Bianca Rademacher and Weber 8-2. Gabe Diaz and Brett Seaton defeated Good and Ouyang 8-4 for the boys.

All winners advance to compete in the USTA National Hard Court Championships in August.

USTA Seniors

More than 50 senior women will gather at Midtown Athletic Club in Overland Park to compete in the United States Tennis Association National Women’s 65, 75 and 85 Indoor Championships. The tournament is Monday through June 29.

A handful of USTA Senior Women from the Kansas City area are scheduled to compete: Pat Clow (Shawnee), Joann Christian (Lenexa), Pilar Guerra (Olathe) and Nancy Young (Prairie Village).

This is Midtown Athletic Club’s 34th year as host of the tournament. Midtown will hold three luncheons during the week-long competition, including a catered banquet.
