BV North grad Jack Sock wins again, advances at French Open

Jack Sock made it look easy Thursday in his second-round match at the French Open in Paris.

Sock, who played tennis in high school at Blue Valley North, defeated two-time NCAA singles champion Steve Johnson 7-5, 6-4, 6-2.

Sock was helped by converting five of 10 break points and making just 16 unforced errors, compared to 29 for Johnson.

Sock is one of three Americans among the 32 men’s singles players alive, joining John Isner and Donald Young in the third round.

No American men have made it to the second week of a Grand Slam tournament since the 2012 United States Open.

“We’re all working hard,” Sock told reporters at Roland Garros after the match. “We come to these tournaments to win matches, and we believe in ourselves that we can win matches and play in the second week and keep advancing.”

Sock will face Dusan Lajovic in the third round, and he would meet No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the round of 16 if both players win their next match.

Sock said he was more nervous than usual before Thursday’s match because he was playing someone he knew well from training together.

“It’s never easy playing friends,” Sock said. “But it’s another battle out there, and I was fortunate enough to get through.”
