Native American tennis championship starts Saturday on Plaza

The Native American National Tennis Championships begin Saturday at the Plaza Tennis Center.

The 38th annual event is open to members of federally recognized Native American Tribes, and more than 100 participants representing many of the 540 tribes are expected to compete.

“We are really trying to cultivate a new generation of Native tennis players,” said Yawna Allen, president of the North American Indian Tennis Association.

The three-day tournament includes a free clinic for area Native Americans, 18 and under, which begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
