Same-gender couples tennis tournament coming to Plaza Tennis Center

Kansas City will host one of the Midwest’s first USTA-sanctioned same-gender couples doubles tournaments at the Plaza Tennis Center.

The May 1-3 event will be held in conjunction with the Senior Husband & Wife Doubles Championships and USTA National Husband Wife Mixed Hard Court Championship.

The same-gender couples tournament will be open to same-sex spouses, those in civil unions, domestic partners and spousal equivalents.

Similar events will be held in Minneapolis, New York City and West Hollywood, Calif., this year. The first such event was held in Palm Springs, Calif., in early March.

A news release from the Missouri Valley Section says the USTA is considering adding a national same-gender couples championship next year.
