Mixed reaction to news of Salvador Perez’s new contract with Royals
On Tuesday the Royals agreed to a contract extension with catcher Salvador Perez that will keep him with the team through the 2021 season.
Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported that the new contract was for five years and $52.5 million. There also is a signing bonus.
While Salvador Perez is a fan favorite, news of the deal wasn’t met with only happiness. Some questioned the Royals’ logic in offering the deal.
So happy that Salvador Perez is staying with the Royals until 2021!!

@DrewGROF Sal Perez's OPS+ per year, 128, 115, 105, 91, 89

Sal Perez is gonna be locked up through 2021, which means he will go from good hitting/great defense catcher to okay hitting/bad defense 1B.

I grew up watching a franchise that couldn't afford to keep good players. Now we've dished money to Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez.

Thinking history's best comp for Perez is Miguel Olivo. Very strong arm, really bad framer. In time, Sal's offense might degrade to Olivo's.

Looks like Sal Perez is getting that well earned money

Good on Sal Perez for getting some more #money. I also don't really care whether it's a good deal for the Royals.

By the end of Sal Perez' contract, his knees will look like the turkey in Christmas Vacation

Good for Sal Perez. Had a two way season for the Royals that was Yadi-esque https://t.co/HtjkyjWGPi

One potential point of concern regarding Sal Perez: He has caught most innings in #MLB over last 3 years, by a lot. Only 25 though. #Royals

I find the Sal Perez extension extremely confusing for KC. On the other hand, the Alex Gordon deal was probably the best of the winter.

Happy for Sal Perez. Rewarded for his hard work and loyalty to the team.

Best thing the Perez deal does is send a clear message to current players and around the league that the Royals will take care of you and...
— Jeff Herr (@TheJeffReport) March 1, 2016
...they are an organization worth investing in and a destination for good players.

The Salvador Perez deal is good because it engenders good will. It's not great as an actual baseball contract.

Royals extend Salvador for 5 more years!! #awesome #ForeverRoyal
— Casey Randels (@CaseyRandels) March 1, 2016
The Salvador Perez extension is really terrible. Not Tulo-extension bad but really an awful deal for #Royals.

Move over Statue of Alex Gordon... make room for Statue of Salvador Perez
— Fake Ned (@TheFakeNed) March 1, 2016
Yeah, Molina got 5/$75M but he was also a year away from free agency and a better hitter than Perez. Perez was four years away from FA.

When you wake up and find out Salvador Perez is staying a Royal until 2021 ⚾️ #ForeverRoyal
