Jonny Gomes was right: The Royals beat all the AL award winners
Jonny Gomes is a 13-year Major League Baseball veteran. A World Series winner. A clairvoyant.
Speaking at the Royals celebration rally after they won the World Series, Gomes took note that the team likely wouldn’t have any major postseason award winners on the team.
On Thursday night, Toronto’s Josh Donaldson won the American League MVP Award. That came a night after Dallas Keuchel won the Cy Young Award. On Tuesday, Carlos Correa won the AL Rookie of the Year Award.
The Royals beat the Astros and Blue Jays on the way to winning the World Series. Here is an excerpt Gomes’ speech from Union Station:
“Hey guess what?” Gomes said. “Cy Young winner. Not on our team. Beat ’em.
“Rookie of the Year? Not on our team. We beat ’em.”
Gomes turned to the players behind him.
“MVP of the whole league? Sorry, guys. Not on our team. But we beat that guy, too!”
After winning the award, Donaldson did give credit to Gomes for helping him become a better hitter.
Here is the cover of Friday’s sports section that takes note of Gomes’ speech:
