In a job that often requires delicacy, Josh Earnest has made no effort to hide his affection for the Royals.

Earnest is the White House Press Secretary and on Thursday he was looking to make a bet on the American League Championship Series with Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz of Texas.

The Washington Post reported that when Earnest was asked about the Royals, he said, “They’re ready to take on Ted Cruz’s other hometown team, the Toronto Blue Jays next,” Earnest said.

As the Post noted, Cruz was actually born in Calgary, Alberta. Either Earnest was poking fun at Canadians or needs to brush up on geography.

“All I’m saying is that if Senator Cruz would like to make a bet with me about our respective hometown teams, that they know how to track me down,” Earnest said, according to The Post.

During last year’s ALCS in Baltimore, The Star caught up with Earnest, a Kansas City native. He was thrilled to catch his Royals playing the Orioles.

“There aren’t a lot of Kansas City people in DC,” Earnest said. “So the fact that I’m a Kansas City sports fan and a Royals fan, it’s a pretty distinguishing feature.”
