For Pete's Sake

Royals’ Ben Zobrist is a huge fan of Z-man sandwich from Joe’s Kansas City

Contrary to what you might think, the Royals’ Ben Zobrist didn’t try the Z-man at Oklahoma Joe’s* for the first time a few weeks ago.

*Yeah, yeah, I know it’s Joe’s Kansas City now, but that doesn’t sound right

That’s the tweet of Zobrist holding a Z-man T-shirt at the barbecue place, and he really likes the Z-man sandwich. A lot.

“Every time I’ve been there, I’ve gotten it, because I’m the kind of guy if I like something I try and stick with it, so every time I’ve been back, I’ve had the same sandwich,” Zobrist said. “You know, I probably won’t go away from it until I just get tired of it, because it’s good. It’s a good sandwich.”

Three years ago, he visited Oklahoma Joe’s (as it was known then) with his sister and got his first taste of the sandwich. He also got a Z-man T-shirt.

“I’ve got that shirt at home in Nashville,” he said. “I’m going to have to pull it out and have it sent here.”

Joe’s was on his radar after his dealt to the Royals in July.

“When I got traded here, I was like, we need to go back to that barbecue place,” he said.

Given his last name, it should come as no surprise that Zobrist is tickled by the name of the Z-man sandwich.

Zobrist’s son Zion is called Z-man by his parents, so of course the whole family had to make a trip to Joe’s.

“It’s just fun to go there and be like ‘You should try the Z-man,’ because we call him Z-man sometimes,” Zobrist said. “It’s a fun experience.”

Zobrist said he really only has had the Z-man sandwich. But, hey, the ribs are good, too.

“I’m going to have to try them sometime,” Zobrist said, “but it’s hard to go away from the sandwich until I get tired of it.”
