New Cleveland Guardians co-owner Travis Kelce said on the latest episode of the New Heights podcast that he had no ulterior motive in taking Taylor Swift to an NBA game this past weekend.

Kelce grew up in Cleveland Heights, and he loves the Cavaliers, so he caught Game 3 of Cleveland’s Eastern Conference Finals series against the Knicks. And Kelce brought his fiancée, superstar singer Swift.

Thing is, Swift is a Knicks fan, and she was once photographed in one of their jerseys.

“Not a lot of teams have been able to get Taylor to wear a jersey,” Kelce said. “I’ll say that, and the Knicks did. The Knicks did, obviously, Carmelo Anthony, Amar’e Stoudemire, two of my favorite players. (were in the picture) ...

“Obviously, Tay’s got a lot of New York ties, so when it came down to going to the Cavs game, she was kind of like, ‘Oh, nice, they’re playing the Knicks, like, sweet, I’ve seen them play before.’ It was fun.”

The celebrity couple sat together at Rocket Arena for the game, but they were not rooting for the same team.

Kelce said he had no ulterior motive in bringing Swift to the game.

“I will say this: this wasn’t me trying to persuade Taylor into being a Cleveland sports fan with me,” Kelce said. “This was me just having a fun date night, knowing that I love going to basketball games. We actually tried to go to a game in New York when I was stuck in Kansas City.”

Perhaps Kelce was working at the Chiefs facility and couldn’t break away to see the Cavs play the Knicks at Madison Square Garden earlier in that series.

But he was happy to get to an NBA game.

Since Kelce began dating Swift, they’ve attended an NHL Final game in Florida, a Guardians-Yankees playoff game in New York at the U.S. Open.

“I love bringing her into the sports world that I appreciate, that’s why you’ve seen us at U.S. Open tennis matches,” Kelce said. “I’ve had her at other baseball games, the Guards versus the Yanks two years ago. You know, I just enjoy bringing her to experience a lot of the fun that I’ve always known to have.”

Pride in Cleveland

Kelce added that he is always happy to bring Swift back to Ohio.

“Obviously being a Cleveland sports fan for my entire life, getting Tay back to Cleveland and showing her my roots is always something I love doing,” he said.

Jason Kelce asked if his brother took Swift to Cleveland Heights, where they grew up.

“Come on now, you know I showed her the Heights,” Kelce said but added after a pause: “Not this time. We came in strictly just for the game this time, but getting back to Cleveland is always something I love doing, and supporting the sports teams that we grew up (watching), knowing that we’re die-hard Cleveland sports lovers.

“It was tough to see him lose, but at the same time, man, it was just so fun to be in the building and feel the electricity in Cleveland, being around the hometown, but right now the Knicks are rolling, man. So hats off to New York.”
